Encryption Is Key

So on Thursday Google announced it was taking serious measures to insure that users emails are safe from bring spyed on.
Google says they're encrypting every single message sent via gmail weither it be via home network or public wifi
What do you guys think? Is Google serious or just using this as a ploy to make people feel safe using their products?
